A person shrouded in a pink sheet of material sits at a table, in front of a heavy curtain of the same colour. Only their gesticulating hands are visible. Scattered playing cards lie on the table in front of them. Four cards are also stuck to the sheet covering the head and the figure holds one card in their hand. On either side of the figure is a microphone, directed down towards the hands.

What you’ll do

Watch ‘PASSING’, a new short film by visually impaired artist Jo Bannon. You’ll see Augusto, a sleight-of-hand magician, and Sindri, a visually impaired dancer, as they unveil the magic of their hands and movements. Guided by Jo’s offbeat humour and ongoing fascination with objects, ‘PASSING’ beckons you to peek behind a pink velvet curtain.

The film explores the ways in which we all perform – on stage and in everyday life. It experiments with sensory modes of seeing, including ASMR sound design and close-up choreographies to disrupt the primacy of the visual sense.

The film is 15 minutes long and will show continually throughout the day. You can drop in and out at any time. This is the audio-described version of the film, and sound will be through wireless headphones.

‘Sleight of Hand – One to One’ performance

Jo Bannon will be performing live at Wellcome Collection on 16 November. Her unique one-to-one performance is 45 minutes long and there will only be 18 shows on the day. You can find out more and book a time slot on the event page.

About your filmmaker

Jo Bannon

Jo is an artist working in performance, choreography and film. Her practice is concerned with how our specific bodies, identities and sensory perceptions impact how we experience the world around us, and how this sensory experience can or cannot be conveyed. Her work is informed by her identity as a disabled woman with albinism and attempts to unpick the ways we look, hear and sense our immediate environment. Bannon’s work is led by form and so manifests in various mediums, including intimate encounters designed for single or small audiences, staged performance, dance, film and installation.
