Alibert first proposed, as the subject of the prize essay at the Hospital of St Louis, the comparative merits of the artificial and natural modes of classification, it occurred to me that it would be vain, and almost presumptuous, for any but a Frenchman to treat on a subject so peculiarly French. The country which gave birth to Jussieu, and Decandolle, Lamarck, Geoffroy St-Hilaire, and Blainville, and fostered the genius of Cuvier, may justly claim the distinction of having led all Eu¬ rope in the march of natural science, and of having dictated the true laws by which she ought to be guided in its pursuit.
