About this work

Description

Journal des observations faites à l'Hôtel-Dieu de Paris sur la maladie d'une Convulsionnaire, la Mère Sainte Cécile, appelleé aussi Soeur de la Croix, réligieuse de l'Hôtel-Dieu. On p. 79 is a pen-drawing of the cross marked out on the patient's body with needle-points. The subject of this MS. was a nurse at the Hôtel-Dieu, and after attending several of the 'Convulsionnaires' who had been confined to this Hospital, she was herself attacked by this extraordinary form of religious hysteria. When the remaining 'Convulsionnaires' had been sent to prison in Paris, most of the documents, etc. relating to them were ordered to be destroyed. The present MS. was perhaps saved on account of its scientific interest and detailed account of pathological symptoms, etc. by Haguenot, who was a professor at the École de Médecine of Montpellier. Produced in Paris.
