About this work

Description

There is another, later, view of the Atala mosque by Thomas and William Daniell, published in their series Oriental scenery, III, with the lettering "A Mosque at Juanpore". See Archer op. cit. where she makes an extensive comparison between the two views

Jaunpur was the capital of an independent Muslim kingdom until the Mughal emperor Akbar captured it in 1559. The Atala mosque, completed in 1408, was built on the site of an old Hindu temple dedicated to Atala Devi
