About this work

Description

A few women in their covered summer costumes (which becomes mainly white in the lithograph) sit on rugs and pray with their children among the sepulchral monuments. Below the cemetery, on the road, the lithograph shows an everyday street scene: a phaeton with its women passengers and coachman who walks with the horses, a porter carrying a load on his back, a street seller and some stray dogs. At the back are pine trees (known as cemetery trees in Turkey). Thursday afternoons were a time for visiting cemeteries.
