Notes
'"Virtue" and "virility" have the same root word - the Latin "vir" meaning "man".'--Page [1]
"Virtue & Virility presents a series of images and quotes taken from profiles on various gay networking mobile apps. The project seeks to highlight at the intriguing ways gay men choose to present themselves in virtual space through photography and text, and looks at questions of masculinity, sexuality and self-portrayal. The texts are taken from the "about me" sections where individuals can write an introduction. These range from vague inspirational sayings to intensely personal existential questions which are poetic, poignant and at times humorous. The "selfies" and portraits selected are headless torsos which underscore perceived ideals of masculinity and desirability, yet their anonymity depicts an underlying stigma associated with queer identity and sexuality even within queer spaces."--From back cover.
