N. Foreman, Iconographic Collections, Wellcome Institute, "Fray Bernardino de Sahagún, a Franciscan friar, arrived in Mexico in 1529. In collaboration with the Aztecs, he learned their language, Náhuatl, and compiled a vast body of information, concerning Aztec lore, belief and observation of the natural world. ... The original manuscript has been in the Biblioteca Medicea-Laurenziana in Florence since the 1790's and is the preeminent source for the study of Aztec life at the time of the Conquest."
