About this work

Description

The man is a savant, physician or philosopher holding a urine flask up to the light in a richly decorated interior, similar to, but not continuous with, the background in the companion painting (47376i). Both paintings also have pieces of coral on a ledge in the background. Laquy may be using the urine flasks held by the man and the woman as a sexual double entendre, but the narrative seems mysterious in both pictures
