About this work

Also known as

Previous title, replaced April 2024 : A palm tree (Iriartea species), with aerial roots. Watercolour after C. Goodall, 1846.

Description

Identified in Goodall's lettering as “Iriartea species”, but the morphology of the root cone (sparse, widely spaced, spinose roots) is indicative of Socratea. A single species occurs in Guyana, Socratea exorrhiza. The uniform shape of the trunk (lacking any bulge), the crownshaft and the shape of the pinnae are concordant with S. exorrhiza (A. Henderson, The palms of the Amazon, Oxford University Press 1995)
