Description
Series shows the fortifications at Jalal-Kut, formerly Jalalabad, Afghanistan, during a siege when it was held under the command of Sir Robert Henry Sale (1782-1845). The damage to the fortifications caused by earthquakes on 19 February 1842 is also shown (Dictionary of national biography, London 1909, vol. 17, pp. 670-678)

Notes
A bibliographical note in Dictionary of national biography, London 1909, vol. 17, p. 678 mentions: "The Defence of Jalalabad, engravings [sic], with letterpress at the end by Colonel W. Sale, fol., London, 1846". Colonel W. Sale, of the East India Company and the 13th Light Infantry, was Sir Robert Henry Sale's father and supplied the text, in a facsimile of his handwriting, for the mounts to which the lithographs are attached. A set of The defence of Jalalabad was offered for sale at Dreweatts Bloomsbury auction house, New York 21 April 2010, lot 83 (59 x 48 cm., lithographed title, lithographed portrait and 23 hand-colored lithographed plates by W.L. Walton mounted on 12 card sheets as issued, in portfolio)
