About this work
Description
Booklet by A.J. White advertising Mother Seigel's Curative Syrup, Mother Seigel's Pills, Mother Seigel's Malt Cough Balsam, Kno-Ska (for piles, skin disorders, eczema), Mother Seigel's Plasters, Mersel's Food (for infants and invalids) and Mother Seigel's Ointment, a lot of which seem to have been laxatives. The book describes how women are more prone to sickness than men, gives beauty hints, how to win a good husband or wife and "The evils of constipation". The cover shows a radiantly healthy young woman in a red dress and white apron holding a young girl similarly dressed in a wood land setting with the title: 'The song of the lark' below. The back has an advertisement ("Mother Seigel's Syrup; the very thing") by 'Hassall' showing a robust man in check trousers and white waistcoat presenting a bottle of the syrup to a frail old lady sitting in a high-backed red chair against a green background. Interior illustrations are by Maud Appleton.
