About this work

Description

Is it possible to believe in God and the theory of evolution? In this thought-provoking documentary, philosopher and theologian Connor Cunningham argues that it is possible to be a Christian who embraces evolution. Cunningham looks back at early accounts of the creation of life on earth found in philosophy and theology and shows how Genesis was meant to be read as myth and metaphor rather than literal fact. By the Victorian era when Darwin's theory of evolution was published, Christians already had a knowledge of fossils and the existence in the past of dinosaurs so, Cunningham argues, they were reading creation stories in the bible in a more sophisticated way than we may now assume. The real battle between Christianity and evolution began 60 years after the publication of Darwin's theory because of the advent in the US of fundamental Christianity. By 1961 Creationism took hold, followed closely by the theory of Intelligent Design. Today Darwinian fundamentalists believe evolution can explain every aspect of the creation of life with no need for recourse to any kind of creator and, according to philosophers such as Daniel Dennett and Richard Dawkins, this necessetates atheism. Cunningham rejects ultra-Darwinism and believes the conflict between Christianity and evolution was constructed by extremists from both camps; he believes that evolution is the how, but God is the why, behind the creation of life on earth.
