About this work
Description
Ruth Fielding is a junior doctor at Birchfield Hospital who hears a voice in her head that tells her to kill herself. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder two years ago and has been suspended from work. Rufus May is a maverick psychologist who doesn't believe there's anything wrong with madness - he himself was sectioned as a schizophrenic as a young man. This drama-documentary replays their work together over twelve months with Rufus playing himself and an actress taking on the role of Ruth. May encourages Ruth not to take her medication, an approach which most of the medical profession think is irresponsible, because he believes there is real meaning behind psychotic experience that the drugs quell. We see May working in a group therapy setting with other psychiatric patients and arguing with psychiatrist Trevor Turner (a consultant psychiatrist for over 20 years) about his book on schizophrenia. It becomes confusing quite early as to whether May's own unusual thinking is either an inspired or a dangerous presence in Ruth's life.
