The scene is set outside the gate of Carlisle through which a group of attendants including pipers and highlanders walk, one holding the Young Pretender's banner. The Young Pretender (Edward Charles Stuart) hands Keppoch the writ for a bishopric inscribed 'For our Trust etc.' To the right, three men (Lords Balmerino, Kilmarnock and Cromartie) are caught in a trap baited with offices of state. Another man (Lord Lovat) and a fox look back at the trap as they walk away. In the distance a figure can be seen hanging. Refers to the brevity of Keppoch's bishopric. He was imprisoned and executed in Carlisle on 18 October 1746
