Children fighting cancer. Part 2, Andrew and Ellie.

The second in a four-part series following nine children as they fight childhood leukemia. This part looks at 6-year-old Ellie and 15-year-old Andrew who both have the most common form of leukemia - acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The methods of treating this kind of leukemia have improved greatly since the 100% death rate in the 1950s to the now nearly 90% survival rate. The programme shows all apsects of the treatment and looks at how hospitals are now setting chemotherapy levels according to Minimal Residual Disease (MRD) - a test which measures how many leukemia cells are still present in the blood so that children who don't need such an aggressive treatment can be spared some of the most devastating side-effects. Shortly into his treatment, Andrew suffers a life-threatening blood clot and is rushed into intensive care. In the end both Ellie and Andrew respond well to chemotherapy and show remarkable strength of character.
