About this work
Description
Six-part documentary series on the promise - and perils - of biotechnology as applied to agriculture, medicine, public health, ecology and welfare. -- Part 3: Growing Pains. Examines the use of biotechnology to create new, pest-resistant, high-yielding crop strains and high- productivity farm animals, and emphasizes the vulnerability of genetically over-uniform crop strains and livestock to attack by newly-mutated fungi, viruses or insect pests. -- Part 4: Blue-Collar Bugs. Examines the potential for using "designer" bacteria and fungi to combat environmental pollution caused by inorganic waste products, and the public health and safety problems inherent in attempts to regulate the release of new micro- organisms into the environment
