    a need for a composite pictorial representation of this subject. In the introduction I have endeavored to give a short review of the course of syphilis and to describe in a few words the diseases of the mouth resembling syphilis, especially in reference to their differential diagnosis. It would by far exceed the limits of this book if I should describe in detail the clinical manifestations of these diseases, which frequently appear only as partial manifestations of general diseases. This book is intended to be an illustrated aid in study and diagnosis. For a more detailed study the text books of medicine, surgery, pediatrics, laryngol- ogy and dermatology are necessary. The therapeutic side has not been taken up, be- cause in syphilis, as in the other mentioned diseases of the mouth, the therapy is usually not only local but also general; consequently, its discussion would lead us too far. Although pictorial representations are but poor substitutes for clinical observations, I hope the pres- ent book will fulfil its task in helping the study and diagnosis of syphilis and similar diseases of the mouth.
