About this work
Description
On the wall are three pictures: a painting or print in an elaborate frame, labelled "Mountain of misery", and two allegorical prints of "Fortitude" and "Temperance", in print frames
The figures are characters in Beresford's "Miseries of human life": they despair about everything, in different ways. On the floor by Mr Sensitive are two books entitled Much ado about nothing and The art of tormenting. Ned declaims "Sunt lacrymæ rerum" (from Virgil's Aeneid)
