Description

Additional portrait of Powell inset in a roundel. Captain Templer and Walter Powell, M.P. for Malmesbury, were involved in an accident in the balloon 'Saladin', while taking meteorological observations, in December 1881. Templer and another man (not shown here) Arthur Agg-Gardiner were thrown clear of the balloon when it crash-landed at Bridport, but the third man, Walter Powell, M.P., was trapped on board, the balloon flew off, and Powell was never seen again
