Notes
Revised and translated version of the author's: Why the French love Jerry Lewis : from cabaret to early cinema.
Published in English in 2001, this book is the first to suggest an analogy between the popular show and hysteria in the hospital in the last third of the nineteenth century. It highlights a direct relationship between the hysterical gestures and the artists of the café-concert and burlesque cinema. This book also seeks to identify and analyze the physiological reactions of the audience, offering a new theory of reception of the show by the public.
