About this work
Description
According to the Protoevangelium of James, the parents of the Virgin, Joachim and Anne, presented her as a child in the temple at Jerusalem as a thank-offering after years of childlessness. Mary is here actually represented as a child and not as a young woman. Zacharias stands before two candles and rests his left hand on an open book. At the top of the stairs stand a row of virgins with their arms folded
