    afternoon, when he suddenly felt an acute pain in the right index, and was astonished « to find it burning and smoking. He rubbed it against his thumb to extinguish the flame, but the flame caught both the thumb and the middle finger. He then rubbed them on his trowsers, but burnt two holes in thera ; next he thrust his hand into his pocket, and set it on fire too ; and finally, he happened to touch the fore and middle finger of the left hand, when these caught fire also. In vain did he plunge them into a bucket of water; they continued to burn. Invaindid he stick them in the mud ; the virtues of the mud were not more potent—at last a devout female remind- ed him that faith saves us ; he dipped them in holy water, and the flames were speedily extinguished.
