    PREFACE. ix the synonyms in every instance in which Smith, and Hooker, and Greville, have not. gpployed” the same appellations. | ce . ; es The genus Chara oh been removed from the class Cryptogamia, in which it is placed by Hooker and Greville, to the class Monandria, to which it is assigned by Smith; not, indeed, that I consider this arrangement more accurate, but because the other would be less useful. The genus Callitriche I have referred to the same ~ class, because the flowers are, for the most part, her- maphrodite, at least in the specimens that I haye seen. Of the class Cryptogamia, I have thought it right to insert a few orders, of which the plants are such, that they cannot fail to attract the attention, and awaken the interest of the student. Some of the plants omitted by Greville, are sup- plied from Maughan’s Catalogue, in the first volume of the Wernerian Transactions. To these I have added a few species, that have not been noticed by any preceding writer, as productions of the neigh- hem, to Dr. Greville. ‘a
