Description
A separate key identifies the figures. The Prince Consort lies in bed, dying of a disease diagnosed as typhoid fever. The Queen sits on the Prince Consort's left. Before her kneels Princess Alice; behind her is Prince Arthur; behind him Sir Charles Phipps, the Prince Consort's Treasurer. On the extreme right is Princess Louise. The Prince of Wales holds the Prince Consort's right hand. In a group on the left stand the Prince's physicians: Sir W. Jenner, Sir James Clark, Sir Henry Holland and Sir Thomas Watson (though the key identifies one of them as Sir William Fergusson).

Letter from Nicola C. Smith to the Wellcome Institute, 6 November 1982, about the oil painting of this subject: "There is some material in the Royal Archives at Windsor Castle about this picture which reveals that it is by an artist called Oakley (under the pseudonym Le Port) and that it met with strong royal disapproval."
