"It does not look Netherlandish to us. Some elements like the women at the bed show German influences, others like the woman with the child and the pose of the man in right hand foreground make one think of French (Fontainebleau-like) characteristics. Altogether, an origin on the French-German border (Alsace?) seems possible, but any definite attribution is hard to find" (letter from G. Kotting, Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, to the Wellcome institute, 16 August 1984)
