A.L.s. 2p. 8vo, Folkestone, 21 September, 1855: I don’t understand Wills’s reference to me concerning Mrs. Gaskell’s story, because I have no other knowledge of it than that he showed me the first part, and that I have received no more. 830 Dickens (C.) A.L.s. 2pp. 8vo, Gad’s Hill, Sunday, 18 October, 1857, an interesting letter : I particularly want a little piece of information, with a view to: the construction of something for Household Words . : . whether at any time within a hundred years or so, we were in such amica- ble relation with South America as would have rendered it reason- ably possible for us to have made either a public treaty or a private bargain, with a South American government, empowering a little English colony to work a silver mine ... or can you suggest from your remembrance any more probable set of circumstances in which a few English people—gentlemen, ladies and children— and a few English soldiers, would find themselves alone in a strange wild place and liable to hostile attack? L.s. 1 p. sm. 4to, and 4p. 8vo, Office of All the Year Round and Gad’s Hill, 1867 and 1868: I havea made up and sent to Birtles a very good number of 51 columns: in case “The Abbot’s Pool” should come out longer than I have allowed for, you can take out “ Midnight Discourse.” The other letter refers to Miss Alice King, the blind novelist (2). 833 Dickens (C.) (initials), 1p. sm. 4to and 8vo, Office of All the Year Round, 1861-3: Asking him to do an article quoting a letter of Whateley. “I don’t want to champion. homeopathy (in which I don’t believe) or or mesmerism (in which I do). Some good illustrations might be got out of a doctor in one of Foote’s plays.” And sending a letter from a doctor at Carlyle, “an useful and estimable man though of forty thousand bore power” who was running a soup kitchen.
