    Consumption was ill-understood, but that the pa- thology of most of t'he affections of the chest;, had not received that investigation which they deserv- ed. Yet none are more important, or indeed, tak- ing their number into consideration, so much so; seeing that the heart and lungs constitute the two main props of what, together vv^ith the brain, Bor- deu felicitously terms the tripod of life. For the time just mentioned, it has been one of the chief objects of my professional labours to advance our knowledge of this interesting class of diseases. The vacancy which the resignation of Dr. Buxton (for several years Physician to the London Hospi- tal,) left at the Infirmary for Diseasesof the Chest, presenting the only favourable opportunity Lon- don affords for seeing, in large numbers, every variety of case connected with pulmonary and other affections of the chest, was eagerly em- braced by me. I was fortunate enough to obtain the situation of Physician to the Infirmary; and trust that the present work will prove I liave not misemployed the abundant facilities it holds cut,
