"At the Evelina Hospital. Thanks to the kindness of friends this little girl may have a happy, if not a merry, Christmas. No romping about, or sightseeing, or hearty eating for her, but nevertheless this abundant supply of toys will assuredly beguile the weariness of pain and weakness. We cannot see whether the adjacent beds are equally well furnished; if not, she will, if a nice little girl, gain an additional gratification by lending some of her treasures to her afflicted neighbours."--The graphic, op. cit. p. 24

The Evelina Hospital was founded in 1869 by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild. His wife Evelina had died in childbirth in 1866. Frederick Taylor (subsequently Sir Frederick) was for a time on the staff of the Evelina Children's Hospital
