Sick and needy people are praying to the Cross. Below right, a bishop in procession goes towards it. The 'Calvaire d'Arras' was first erected in 1677, then replaced with a new one in 1738 by François Xavier Duplessis S.J. Healing miracles were attributed to it, and it was represented in paintings and prints (including a series of engravings by N.J.B. de Poilly, of which the present print is one). This second Calvaire lasted until 1799, but its fame continued to be spread through prints in the 19th century (Notter, op. cit.)
