Reconstruction of the hand.

The adult patient (only identifiable at the end) has a malformed thumb but satisfactory movement of the other fingers. This extraordinary surgery shows how the small finger is amputated and then placed where the thumb should be. The surgery is considerably edited down for this film. After surgery, the patient has good movement and the hand can grip more naturally, open containers and write but still looks rather strange without the missing a digit. The patient writes his signature and demonstrates fine motor skills using a fine screwdriver, winding a watch and tying shoelaces. He can light a match and smoke a cigarette.
