About this work
Description
Walter Sewell was a physically disabled man. The album contains, in addition to photographs, two documents referring to Walter Sewell: an invoice made out to Walter Sewell, Hatton, 22 July 1954, from a garage in Foston, Derby; and a card recording National Insurance payments by W. Sewell, 15 Scropton Road, Hatton, Derby. From these documents, Walter Sewell is assumed to be the creator of the album and the man who appears repeatedly in the photographs
Most of the photographs are amateur shots, but three are professional: 1. loose at beginning of album, a group photograph with stamp of Ilkeston Pioneer (local newspaper in Derbyshire) on verso; 2. on fol. 7, a photograph by Studio Raeburn, 1 Hounds Gate, Nottingham, showing W. Sewell in a wheelchair at a showing of the Hammer film of "Someone at the door" with Michael Medwin (1950); and 3. on fol. 11, a press photograph of W. Sewell studying accountancy, taken by the Derby Evening Telegraph
