The college was officially known as Collège Mazarin but gained the popular name Collège des Quatre Nations after the Treaties of Münster and Pyrénees acquiring four provinces: Flanders, Alsace, Rousillion, and Piedmont
The college was founded by Cardinal Mazarin and designed by Louis Le Vau, erected 1662-1674
The college became part of the Institut de France in 1795
