The foundation stone of the school was laid on 24 February 1914 by Lord Carmichael, Governor of Bengal. In his speech, Carmichael invoked the example of the Wellcome Laboratories at Khartoum. The school opened to students in 1921. The school owed its existence in part to the advocacy of Dr (later Sir) Leonard Rogers (1868-1962). The architect is mentioned in The builder (1915, vol. 108, p. 9) as H.A. Crouch RIBA, i.e. Henry Arthur Crouch (1870-1955), Consulting Architect to the Government of Bengal 1909-1925
