About this work
Description
This is one episode of a three part series on the history of the welfare state. It tells the story of the NHS, from its inception in 1948 up to the present day (1990s) by narration over film clips with comment by Prof. Brian Abel Smith (health economist and historian of medicine). It includes valuable eye witness testimony from health care workers and politicians. Re-organisation in the 1990s is discussed with gloom especially the introduction of a commercial mindset. Anxiety around funding is prevalent.
