Description

The woodcut represents the brain in 35 cells, each labelled extensively with woodcut text in Japanese and describing the human faculties in four groups: deliberation, comprehension, opinion, and taste. They probably derive from phrenological systems of Franz Joseph Gall (1758-1828) and Johann Kaspar Spurzheim (1776-1832), and from the charts published by their followers
