Description
Reproduction of a photograph of the memorial tablet of Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817-1911), British botanist and explorer, located in St. Anne's Church, Kew, London. The tablet, which has a silhouette art profile of Hooker and a motif of five plants, was designed by Matilda Smith. In the exhibition catalogue the tablet is described as "Portrayed in Wedgwood ware are five of Hooker's chief botanitcal interests, amongst which is a representations of the Cinchona Calisaya tree." The photograph was reproduced as part of the exhibition Malaria section of the international celebration and exhibition : three hundredth anniversary of the first recognized use of cinchona by Europeans, 1630-1930 hosted by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum in 1930. The facsimile is listed as exhibit no. 954 in the souvenir catalogue and is not held by Wellcome Collection. Related image: M0001433
