Biographical note
Project Summary:The film explores Rainer Maria Rilke's poetic notion that each surface contains potential sound- engravings, or visual patterns that echo the acoustic, from the abstract patterns of a gramophone groove to the irregular, almost seismographic lines of a coronal suture. The soundtrack's musical composition uses vintage sound recordings interlaced with a voice-over which draws on Rilke's text 'Primal Sound' as well as the ear-scapes described in his 'Sonnets to Orpheus', distorted by the effects of bone conduction and bionic hearing. The film will use microscopic photography, scanning electron micrography, and other imaging and acoustic techniques to create aural surfaces and sound seams.
