In conversation in Dunedin with Professor Derek North, the late Sir Horace Smirk (1902-1991; Emeritus Professor of Medicine, University of Otago, and former Director, Wellcome Research Institution) recalls his life and work in medical research, especially his work on hexamethium in the treatment of malignant hypertension and the diagnosis of auricular fibrillation at University College Hospital between 1930 and 1935, and assesses the contribution of his former colleague Sir John McMichael, FRS and former Wellcome Trustee (1904-1993) to British cardiology. Of interest to historians of modern medical science.
