THE EFFECT OF SOAP ON THE SKIN.—When soap is used for washing the skin—says Dr. Erasmus Wilson—the excess of alkali contained in it combines with the oily fluid with which the skin is naturally bedewed, removes it in the form of emulsion, and with it a portion of the dirt. Another portion of the alkali softens and dissolves the superficial stratum of the scarf-skin (this is the insensitive skin which the needlewoman pierces in the operation of sewing on the finger ; it is the scarf-skin which the cuttler shaves in order to test the sharpness of his blade), and, when this is rubbed off, the rest of the dirt disappears. So that every washing of the skin with soap removes the old face of the scarf-skin, and leaves a new one ; and were the process repeated to excess, tfe latter would become so much attenuated as to render the body sensible to a touch too slight to be felt through its ordinary thickness. On the other hand, where the scarf-skin and the dirt are rarely disturbed by soap, the sensibility of the skin is necessarily benumbed. Soap, therefore, is the best and proper detergent for the skin. Other means than soap for the purification of the skin are highly ob¬ jectionable—such as wash-powders ; they are sluttish expedients, half-doing their work, and leaving all the corners uns .vept. A CURE FOR HEADACHES.—Brushing the hair and shampooing are recommended for the relief of headache. “ Amongst the accessories for the reliel of headache,” says one writer, “ I would mention the value of having the hair smartly and vigorously brushed by a hair-dresser during the coming on of a head¬ ache, and the circular brush which is prompted to action by machinery is more soothing in its influence than the ordinary brush, when controlled solely by the hand of man. For a neuralgic headache and for rheumatism of the scalp, the circular brushing by machinery is only equalled by the comfort of sponging the head with hot water ; and it outvies the sponge, inasmuch as the patient has nothing to fear from catching cold after the operation. THE BATH.—The employment of baths in order to preserve health and ward off disease has been hitherto greatly neglected by some classes of the com¬ munity. The effect which baths exert both physically and morally is very con¬ siderable, for, besides influencing the body for good, they exert a powerful influence on the mind as well, and in the case of children and young persons especially this mental effect is of very great importance. )
