About this work

Also known as

Pask Untitled.

Description

Intertitle: Unconscious floating posture. The captions note that the subject is anaesthetised and given a muscle relaxant. Three cameras were used (two above water and one below). These shots were taken in still water at 30 degrees centigrade. The first life jacket tested is RNZN life jacket, then a modified RCAF life waistcoat (any serviceman wearing this model would have quite clearly drowned as the subject's face is fully submerged even in still water). Next the BOT Kapok and then a full buoyancy suit. The subject remains face down in the water proving the latter has no self-righting properties. RN Life belt displays similar properties. Underwater shots of the subject being hoisted out of the pool.

Notes

Conservation and access copies made from the film collection comprising of 55 items donated by Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics, Oxford, to the Wellcome Trust in 2008. In 1937, Lord Nuffield established a clinical chair of anaesthesia in Oxford amidst some controversy that anaesthesia was even an academic discipline. The collection is a mixture of clinical and educational films made or held by the department to supplement their teaching dating from the late 1930s onwards.
From the catalogue accompanying the collection: Odd shots of the PASK film. Quite good, but nothing particularly interesting.
This film displays considerable wear and tear throughout.
