About this work

Description

Oil painting of Pocahontas (c.1595-1617), born Matoaka and known as Amonute and Rebecca. It is a copy of a painting hung in Booton Hall, the home of her husband’s family, the Rolfes. Sir Henry Wellcome commissioned the copy and later presented it to the United States Senate. It is now held by the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institute. Related images: M0008543.
