Biographical note

Project description:

This award funded the production of a one-hour documentary about Mary Seacole for Channel 4. Mary Seacole: The Real Angel of the Crimea examines the life and works of the 19th-century Jamaican ‘doctress’ who treated sufferers of cholera, dysentery, diarrhoea and yellow fever with her herbal remedies in Jamaica, Panama and, most famously, the Crimean War. It fills in the gaps in her autobiographical account, uncovering her background and establishing the specific medical knowledge she learned from her Creole mother and Jamaican peers and practised on three continents. The film combines interviews with medical and military historians, previously unpublished diaries and letters, laboratory tests, reconstruction and contemporary illustrations.
