About this work

Description

Investigates allegations by former psychiatric patients and nurses against Dr. Kypros Loucas, Consultant Psychiatrist at Broadmoor from 1970-1989. His position at Broadmoor gave him the scope and power to use inmates for his own surgical experiments (hormone implants for sex offenders) and to subject them to "raw" ECT treatment. The death of one of Dr. Loucas' patients' is also investigated. Complaints about him throughout his time at Broadmoor drew no response from the Department of Mental Health. When pressure was put upon the Department by the Mental Health Commissioners, Dr Loucas left Broadmoor and continued his career in the NHS at Norton Hospital, where he left following the death of a patient to whom he administered high doses of drugs. At the time the film was made he was working as a Consultant Psychiatrist at Wormwood Scrubs. Both he and the Minister for Healt refused to take part in this programme.
