Biographical note
On 26 June 2000 the American President Bill Clinton and British Prime Minister Tony Blair participated in a joint press conference in which they announced that a complete human genome sequence draft had been finished by both the Human Genome Project and Celera Genomics. Negotiations between Francis Collins, Director of the National Human Genome Research Institute and Craig Venter, President of Celera Genomics resulted in an agreement that both parties would publish their papers simultaneously. There was then a joint press conference on 12 February 2001 between the Human Genome Project and Celera Genomics to announce their sequence papers published in Nature and Science respectively.
