About this work

Description

This timely programme, presented by Deborah Davies, looks at possibly the fastest growing illness in Britain - alcoholic liver disease. Hospital admissions for the condition have doubled in the last ten years with more and more young people being affected. Dispatches set up a mobile liver testing unit in London and Birmingham which showed that 50% of the general public have abnormal liver function. The British Liver Trust would like the Department of Health to put warnings on the alcohol sold in supermarkets but they are reluctant to do so despite the fact that cheaper alcohol sold in supermarkets has been proved in numerous studies to be linked to the rise in drinking. The programme includes footage of a liver transplant operation and shows in detail what a severely diseased liver looks like.
