Description

Carved wooden sculpture depicting Dr Simpson, Medical Officer at Bamenda, Cameroon, performing an operation on a patient whilst his assistant administers an anaesthetic. The sculpture was carved at Jabu Ode (Ijebu Ode) sometime between 1920-1935. It was presented to Dr Simpson who gave it to the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum in 1938. It is currently held by the Science Museum (object number A656670).
