William Henry Kirby served as the Chief Accountant and later the Assistant General Manager of the pharmaceutical company Burroughs Wellcome & Co. As a freemason, he co-founded with Henry S. Wellcome the Clarence Lodge of Instruction, later re-named in his honour the Kirby Lodge of Instruction. He died at the age of 37 from burns caused by a gas explosion in his kitchen at home. His tomb erected by members of the Lodge, stands eight feet tall: its pedestal, an Aberdeen granite cube, weighs nearly 10 tons, and is carved with masonic motifs
