About this work

Description

The 3rd part of an 8-part series in which Dr. Alice Roberts, doctor and anatomist, explores the workings of the human body. This part looks at the liver. Roberts shows how the liver works to process nutrients from the stomach and clean the blood. Mother and daughter, Julie and Katie, assess their drinking patterns and join Roberts to examine the liver of a pig. As 50% of liver disease is caused by the over-use of alcohol, Roberts asks a random selection of people what they understand to be safe drinking levels; Julie and Katie keep a drinking diary. Philip Parker has cirrhosis of the liver which has led to liver cancer; we see him as he goes through liver transplant surgery. At the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Liverpool, stem cells are seen being harvested from newborn babies' umbilical cords and used to create new liver cells.
