    (2) Access to Beds. It is suggested in the Goodenough Report that a Teaching School with ioo annual intake to the clinical course should have access to about 1,000 beds, but that it is not essential that all these beds should be in one hospital; so long as there is close linkage of staff the Goodenough Report goes on, the beds could be in several geographically associa¬ ted hospitals. Such an arrangement it is said would be beneficial to the associated hospitals. Question 2. , (a) Do the Medical Committees concur in the view that i,ooo beds are necessary for ioo student intake to the clinical course (i) if all are in one hospital ? (ii) if some are in a parent hospital and remainder in associated hospitals ? If not, what figures are recommended ? (b) If it should prove possible to link up with these associated hospitals, would such a link be desirable ? in all cases ? in which ? (3) The size of a Hospital in one Unit. A view has been expressed that while a certain number of beds, e.g., 8oo, is possibly the best number of beds for a general hospital from the point of view of ensuring intimate relationships between all members of the staff and all departments of the hospital, and of medical, nursing and lay administration, yet the optimum clinical student intake might demand that a greater number of beds be provided in the one unit. Question 3. (i) What number of beds do the Medical Committees consider is the optimum for a general hospital in one unit ? (ii) On the balance of all the factors, what do the Medical Committees consider to be the optimum size for a general teaching hospital in one unit ? and why ?
