About this work

Description

Manuscript and typescript letters. Many of the letters are partially dated but they clearly refer to a visit to Cambridge in 1888. Cattell wanted to meet Galton and was interested in his laboratory. Letters refer to Cattell's papers on experimental psychology which he would like Galton to look at. Particular items:
  • Letter dated 10 September 1888 contains a proposed table of contents for Cattell's proposed book on 'experimental psychology'.
  • Letter dated 9 January 1889: Cattell was going to America. He stated that Galton's apparatus for testing muscular sense was not quite suitable for psychological purposes so Darwin was going to make another set, and he would like to meet with Galton to discuss the best form.
  • Letter dated 26 January 1890: mentions tests and methods. Cattell was more doubtful about the tests for sensation. He was interested in competitive examinations to test body efficiency.
  • Letters dated 1901 concerns publication of Galton's work in The Popular Science Monthly.
